If any of you are parents to young kids, then you very well may be – like me – overwhelmed at times with all the information out there about what we should and shouldn't be doing. There are so many do's and don't's which seem to be constantly changing, it can be difficult to keep up.
One thing I've become very conscious of recently is plastic and how much we use every day. Not just the obvious things like the bottle of water you may buy from the shop, but when it comes to small children most of the feeding & drinking sets aimed at them are made from plastic, and very often this is melamine. Not only is melamine non recyclable, which means it ends up in landfill, but there have been studies carried out that have concluded that certain chemicals can leach from the plates into the food we are serving, especially if the plates are exposed to high temperatures – like in a microwave for example – which concerns me, as I now see them as a possible health risk for my kids.
I like to err on the side of caution when it comes to anything like this, because unfortunately now, we are exposed to so many more toxins and chemicals than ever before, if I can reduce that exposure for my kids I will – why take any risks?
I was shopping in TK Maxx one day and I was delighted to find this eco alternative – a Beco Feeding Set – which I love! It's BPA phthalate free and is made entirely from natural fibres so is completely biodegradable with no negative effect on the environment. The whole set is really well designed with high sides on the plate which is great for getting your child used to using a plate instead of a bowl. The cup is ergonomically designed to allow a small child to grip, and I'm finding my one year old is enjoying learning to drink from it – despite the constant water spillages all over the house! They also make a step, a potty and clothes hangers so I will definitely be giving their other products a try.
