It's officially springtime. The clocks will change tonight, the days will start getting brighter – the weather has already started to improve - we can finally say goodbye to the winter. This is all good news to me as I'm not a massive fan of the cold weather and dark nights.
Now, can cast your mind back to January – how many of you made some new years resolutions? I didn't do any this year – I rarely manage to stick to them for longer than a few weeks so made the decision not to make any this year. The thing is, I love the idea of making a resolution – to have some positive changes made to my life – but I have never thought January was a good time to do this. I do, however, believe springtime is the perfect time. Spring is a season of renewal and rebirth, a time of change – from darkness to light, from cold to warmth – it is a time of year we are more open to changes in our lives. So why not make some springtime resolutions instead? We spring clean our homes every year – why not spring clean our lifestyles as well? Here are the three resolutions I'm making this spring:
Be more active: It's always easy to make an excuse for not exercising in the winter, but now the weather is showing some signs of improvement, those excuses are a bit more difficult. My plan this spring is to get into some sort of a fitness routine. I've recently started yoga – which I'm loving – so planning to keep it up at least once a week and I’d like to get out twice a week for a run if I can. I'm going to try little things like take the stairs instead of the lift and walk to my mums house instead of drive – everything little helps. I love going for walks with the kids, and we are lucky to have some beautiful places to go in Northern Ireland – Black Mountain is one of my favourites – when you get to the summit you have amazing panoramic views over Belfast – if you haven't done it before then I highly recommend it.
Be more conscious of what I eat & drink: Winter is the time for big hearty warming dinners, which I love, but when spring comes it feels right to start eating to lighter meals. Also in winter you are hiding underneath all the layers of clothes and as the weather changes so to does your wardrobe so you want to feel happy showing off a bit more skin than before. My plan is to drink more smoothies, they can either be as a meal replacement or just as a drink, depending what you put in it. I also want to reduce the amount of processed sugar I eat – I want to make more healthy snacks rather than eating things that can be bought in a shop. We all have heard the saying 'you are what you eat' and I firmly believe this, so this spring I'd like to be a lot healthier than before.
Sleep more: Sleep is natures way of recharging both our mind and body so they are ready for the new day ahead, so its pretty important to get a good nights sleep. I have been guilty of going to bed way too late recently – and with a one year old son who likes to wake a few times during the night I never really get a full nights sleep, so it is even more important that I go to bed earlier than I do. I don’t know why I don’t do it, and I often regret it the next day, so I’m going to make a real effort to get my recommended eight hours – interrupted or not!
It looks like spring has sprung – what are you going to do to spring clean your routine?
